From our past
.From Vicar’s
letter May 1937
This month, as everyone knows, takes place on May 12th
the Coronation of King George and Queen Elizabeth. They
are called to a task heavy with responsibility and
anxiety, the ceaseless toil of ruling, leading and
serving our great nation. Our Bishop in the May number
of the Diocesan Chronicle writes; “It is still
undeniable that this country is expected to give a lead
to the world; wrong direction by the British Empire at
the present time would misdirect the whole world, and
the responsibility for directing this country lies with
our King and Queen.” I have arranged services of Holy
Communion on Coronation Day at 6.15, 7 and 8 and the
official service of Prayer and Thanksgiving at 9.30.
This latter service will be over in time to allow people
to get home to hear the broadcast of the Service from
the Abbey. I did consider having this relayed to the
Church or the Parish Room, but I came to the conclusion
that, since practically everyone these days has the
wireless in their own homes, the cost of arranging such
a relay would not be justified. No doubt the few who
have not got the wireless can make arrangements to hear
the broadcast in the home of friends.
